Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical
practice of stimulating the body's bioelectric energy and bringing it into balance.
According to Chinese medicine, illnesses or symptoms in the body, mind or spirit can be
associated with disharmony in a person's vital energy or Chi. Radiant good health is
reflected by a balance in this vital energy. The body's energy is said to flow along
channels or meridians. "Acupuncture points" along these meridians are directly
tied to various organs, body parts, and bodily functions. When an organ is out of balance
or there is an illness, a tenderness is usually detected at the corresponding acupuncture
point, aiding in the diagnosis of the underlying causes of an illness. These points act
like dimmer switches, allowing the acupuncturist to turn up the bioelectric energy when it
is low, or turn it down when it is too high, thus allowing the body to regain its balance
or health.
This 5000-year-old science involves the use of special
needles, often supported by Chinese herbal treatments to stimulate a return to balance and
a restoration of well-being. The practice of acupuncture is regulated through licensure by
the State of New Jersey. Thousands of documented clinical cases show the value of
acupuncture treatments.
